Participatory Design in Action

TOGETHER, we BUILT this class

From Teaching to Co-Creating Vietnamese Lessons

Participatory Design

I believe that teaching Vietnamese is not just about transferring knowledge—it’s about creating a shared journey with my students. Every lesson is not something I give, but something we build together.

What makes this journey meaningful is that the learning doesn’t stay on the pages of a textbook. It becomes real, lived, and experienced by the learner. Over time, I’ve realized that what truly works in my teaching is not one fixed method, but a way of designing learning that centers around the student—their needs, their context, and their growth.

Just minutes before, I found out there’s a name for this approach I’ve been intuitively following all along: Participatory Design. It puts learners at the heart of the process and gives a structure to the values I hold dear:

· Collaboration – learning is co-created, not delivered.

· Empowerment – students feel ownership over their learning.

· Contextual Fit – lessons reflect real-life needs and cultural relevance.

· Iterative Feedback – regular input and reflection guide improvement.

From Teaching to Co-Creating

I remember receiving the above handwritten card on a very beautiful yet emotionally heavy day—a short farewell meet-up with my beloved student. As I read it, I felt deeply moved. His words weren’t about grammar rules or vocabulary lists; they were about how he had lived the language, how it had become part of his life. That’s when it hit me: we didn’t just complete a course—we co-created a language experience.

At that moment, I realized this wasn’t just “teaching.” It was something deeper. And though I hadn’t known the term Participatory Design before, I had already been practicing its principles with heart and intention.

To me, teaching is like tending a garden with someone beside you. You don’t just plant seeds and walk away—you learn to read the seasons together, adapt to the soil, and celebrate the growth. Participatory Design gives me a sturdy trellis to guide the way we grow—together.

I’m incredibly grateful for the learners who walk this path with me. They don’t just receive knowledge—they shape it. And through them, I too become a better version of myself.

🌿 What about you?

Have you ever been part of a learning journey that truly felt shared? Whether you’re just starting out or have been walking the Vietnamese learning path for a while, I’d love to hear how co-creation shows up in your world.

And if this inspires you to design something of your own—you’re warmly welcome to give it a try. I’d be more than happy to walk alongside you on that journey. Just feel free to text me!
